It's a Nice Day for a White...

... Wedding (Shower)! (Love that Billy Idol song, remember?)

As promised, here are a few images from this weekends Wedding Shower! It was SO MUCH FUN to plan, and I am very pleased about the outcome as well, but you be the judge....

The setting was spectacular; We set up the table at the end of the garden, under a large tree with the lake as a backdrop. The weather was wonderful, warm and with a slight breeze in the early hours, and a little windy in the afternoon.... We used two huge white damask tablecloths, white (rented) chairs, turquoise plates*, turquoise linen napkins with white embroidery and the decoration down the middle of the table were tiny white orchids in clay pots. (I covered the clay pots in plain white tissue paper and tied a bow with a thin turquoise ribbon).

A work in progress... In the large tree shading the table, we hung white paper lanterns. This idea proved to be far more encompassing than anticipated, as the lawn slopes towards the lake, so... scaling the tree was the only option!

Almost there.... we used five different size lanterns, and when we were done with all eighteen of them it looked really pretty!! .... this is about half way through :)

Closer to the house, in the shade, we set up the food table, complete with this little swan, dutifully holding up three more small white orchids. Some may recognize this planter from Anthropology a while back...

The beautiful and sweet Bride-to-be, looking stunning in her coral and white. Everyone else were wearing white from head to toe, and she was asked to wear coral...

... more white orchids :) They were given out as party favors, so everyone could be reminded of what a beautiful day it had been!! The colorful painting is an original, painted by the owner of the house, and a perfect pop of color to an otherwise all white party!

We did have just a little color, but it all came from the food... in this case the colorful macaroons, perched high on the most gorgeous, white, milk-glass, pedestal cake stand. They tasted as good as they look, and were quickly gone :)

And by now you know I just can not walk by a hibiscus flower without snapping a picture...

Hope you enjoyed this little sneak peek, we had a wonderful day! We couldn't have asked for better weather, better company or a sweeter person to honor!

Wedding Shower Countdown

Just a few more days to the Wedding Shower...
Invitations have been sent, RSVP's have been received for the most part... (why is it that people do not have the courtesy to let you know if they will attend or not? Bad manners or simply forgetfulness??), flowers have been ordered, desserts planned, decorations almost done :)

Drinks will be poured, but the color theme will be a secret for now as the bride reads this blog from time to time (hi CR!).

I am looking forward to seeing it all come together! ... and to show you a few images as well :)

I was drawn to this image today. I like a good bedside image, you know, one of those where everything is in its place, fresh flowers on the table, artwork and good reading light... To me this TOTALLY WORKS!
... I'm just not sure I would have dressed the bed in those sheets, considering the headboard, but that's just me :)

What is the verdict?
Go or NO-go??

Hi there...

The new rue magazine is out, and I just had to thumb through, looking forward to really diving in tonight!!

I was surprised by Winters Embrace... cool fashion shoot, and the wall mural on page 96 is AMAZING!! Super cool :)

The interior space that I was drawn to, at first glance, belong to Danielle Moss. Her Chicago apartment is full of natural light, a beautiful white space with lots of personality. I can't wait to study the images :) ... there is even a blog to check out as well. And soon The Everygirl will launch, should be exciting for sure!!

Brilliant White

I picked up this book a few weeks ago, but haven't really had the time to study it until today.
It is chock full of fantastic interiors in ALL WHITE, design solutions, details and lots of texture!

So inspired by what I have seen, here are a few spaces, all different, but all with the same white look. Enjoy :)

Clean, minimal, open plan living in all white...

Cozy all white space by IKEA, complete with sheepskin and lots of natural light.

I have had this kitchen image in my files for a long while, it has everything I would love in my own kitchen!
(If only I had the room :) )

... and last but not least; a soothing, all white bedroom! While lots of people I know would prefer a darker bedroom, I am all about the white and bright room. To me this is PERFECT, down to the pale aqua basket and the soft aqua coral pattern on the pillows!

You are in luck... follow me on a quick home tour!

Great outdoor space, makes inside / outside living easy... and with a facade of glass, lots of natural light gets in, making the home bright and cheerful.

The home is full of wonderful modern furniture classics and pops of color here and there to breaking up the all white space.

Stone floors and heigh ceilings keep the home cool, open plan living keeps the eye moving and opens the space, blurring the fine line between the inside and outside, visually extending the living space.

What is your thought on the multi colored chairs?? How fun is that... !

Check out this bathroom... LOVE all the light bouncing around! Waking up in the morning would be a delight... :) Pretty cool natural elements, and that picture window is not too shabby either.

Why not hang artwork outside?? I am not totally sold on the bright green color chosen for the upholstery here, but in keeping with the rest of the home, I guess it works... Your thoughts?

On the other hand; LOVE the color of the pool!! A cross between emerald green and turquoise makes it really "fit in". I am so used to seeing light turquoise pools here in Florida, this is more my style... and I don't even have my own pool...

So, did you like this home? I would love to live there, looks like a great home!! I would probably be spending most of the time outside, what about you??

Pretty little things...

Considering the beauty of candlelight, I am one to to have tea lights sprinkled all over the house...
I love the soft glow in the late afternoon, and the warmth of the flame against the darkness in the early evening.

But what about candlelight in the daytime?? Look how pretty and soft this image is...
Those faceted glass votives are from Tine K. While in Denmark this past fall, I thought about picking up a few, couldn't decide on a color and now I am regretting - a little bit - not having decided on a hue!!

Oh well, such is life :)

It is no secret that traveling will inspire you, just as much as recharge your batteries. I find that if you keep your eyes open, inspiration comes to you!
Check out this "great wall" of China....

Let me explain; The owner of this condo lives in Norway, but the inspiration for this amazing art installation comes from a visit to the Phillip Starck designed restaurant Papillon in Shanghai, China. Upon returning to Norway, he set out to recreate this amazing art installation, and what a great job!

All these amazing butterflies are from China - hence the "great wall of China" reference above... but you probably already figured that out :) There are 200 frames, and it must have been a great math problem, figuring out the exact measurements of the frames and the spacing... I'm just saying...

What do you think? Pretty cool, huh? Can you imagine having this installation in your home? I am mesmerized... loving the modern atmosphere and cool colors to off set this somewhat busy nature wall!!

... and this image really just made it into the post 'cause I like the kitchen / dining area with the open fireplace :)

So many try to do the Christmas light thing on the palms down here in Florida, but it's really only a handful of places that truly get it right!! I love when the lights are carried all the way to the tip of the branches, but not all of them... :)

In my travels today, I came upon these beautiful and delicate images of Christmas roses (at least that's what I think they are called). The image above is coming to you via Seventeendoors , a blog I love to visit for a little Scandinavian flair, and a big supporter of the Northern Light Blog.
(for which I am grateful!)

This second image via Annixen on Pinterest, but also a great Scandinavian read :) LOVE the delicate and fragile feel of the new blooms!
So fresh and with a promise of spring.... well, maybe that's a little early!

This last dark and GORGEOUS Julerose is so awesome!!!

I imagine this image blown up and hung as artwork in an all white home, to create a little depth and interest. Very cool treatment with the raw twine around the roots...

See, not everything at Christmas time need be evergreens :)

Bridal Shower

I managed to squeeze in a planning meeting for a Bridal Shower this weekend, can't wait to get it all together. With four (very busy) people sharing in the responsibility, we should be able to pull off an amazing event, don't you think?

The plan is simple; A color scheme has been chosen, an accent color picked, the date is set, the location scouted & the invites... well, they will go out within a week or so, and then there is no turning back :)

... Notice the big clam shell :) I think I will try this; In fact I will try this, I'm going to fill it with all silver balls!!

Just wanted to share these pretty and easy to customize Christmas ornaments with you, courtesy of Anna Spiro. I find that the pink ribbon gives these hand blown glass pieces a little punch, and super easy to change to your color scheme!!

Green Christmas!

I had to do a double take, when I first spotted these Christmas images (over here, and subsequently here), as I am a big fan of Hydrangeas, and what a perfect way to incorporate them into the Christmas decor????

Don't you just love how the colors are kept cool, modern and monochromatic? The Parrot Tulips mixed with the white Hydrangeas and all the greenery on the mantle, makes for a wonderful Green Christmas! I am inspired by the use of ornaments, and will probably take the advice of the Holiday Guide, and stock up AFTER the Holidays for next years decorations! (Read; BIG savings on Christmas ornaments)!!

Design Editor Emily Ruddo is responsible for the festive styling, and she gets my vote for preppy & green!!

Look!!! PERFECT buffet table.... I am totally digging the use of muted colors, and love how a little blue has been added to the mix! I say start using what you have around the house for props, I am guessing those props already are in your favorite colors, so it will probably mix well with your Christmas decor, as we never stray very far, do we?? Well, I don't anyway :) Keeping the bigger serving pieces white, makes the food you serve pop, and let's the Christmas decorations be the highlight!

Why don't you...

... use one of these glass domes to showcase your Christmas ornaments? So pretty!!

All you have to do is make your selection, or color story if you will, flip the dome upside down, place the ornaments inside, ad the plate and flip the whole thing upside down ever so gently!! (This is where I get impatient, and a little irritated, as they always shift a little...) Voila!

And for those of you who have access to large pine cones, this is a fun version, perhaps on a mantle or in a window sill?

If you are not doing a tree this year, these are some of the ideas I would use to showcase all the beautiful Christmas ornaments you probably have stacked away anyway...

Bring 'em out and ad a little sparkle to your house!!!

White Christmas Ornaments

Have you ever noticed how difficult pure white Christmas ornaments are to find??

When I spotted these, I just had to share! Last December I had a lot of color in my Holiday Posts, but for some reason I am seeking out the monochromatic scheme this year.... for now at least!

With so many, many choices in Christmas decor, and when pretty much anything is OK, what do you do then? Stick with tradition, create your own tradition, shake things up, or?? Have you picked a color scheme?
I have, for a few years now, been picking up vintage mercury glass ornaments (all silver), in the hopes of creating an icy look. Last year I added a purple (a couple different shades for depth) and the year before that I mixed in turquoise... I like to change it up a little, what about you??

Black & White Christmas.

For all of you who love a good Black & White story, this home you will LOVE, I promise!!!

Super cool, this Antique mirror from Sweden, don't you think? It is from the 1700, and I really like how it's casually propped against the wall, not only reflecting the light, but also giving you a glimpse into this Christmas decorated home...

The home is a study in open plan living, how to make one large room feel cozy and warm, even with such a strict color pallet. I am liking the low Christmas tree, and the bucket is fantastic! Keeping true to the overall feel of the home, a little sprinkle of ethnic flair.

Stark contrast, mixing of metals, a little star dust and the table has been set!
The tabletop has been covered in leather.... I know, can you imagine how cool that is??!

A view of the living area, complete with fireplace, Christmas lights and candles. While this reads all white, the black console grounds the space, as does the big chair in the background. Notice the new take on "antlers", those tall horns are great sculptural pieces and carry the eye up. Notice the high gloss ceiling and beams, helps bounce light around the space.

In another area of the house, you can find two large white chairs and a cool leather ottoman, great area for conversation and great views of the snow covered garden. I am liking the fur pillows, especially the cool grey color! I saw a lot of fur while back in Denmark this past September... Notice the interesting tall black and silver (?) artwork on the right wall!

The IKEA sofa has been dressed up with a bunch of beautiful, custom pillows, made from fabric woven with gold thread... Details, my friends, it's all in the details!! ... and those two metal coffee tables, helps keep the room cool.

The kitchen has been kept simple; a garland above the stove, a few oranges for aroma and live candles for a cozy atmosphere.

Meet Jeanett Ulrich, clothing designer and home owner! Jeanett is sitting pretty in a black Arne Jacobsen Egg chair, sporting her own design. She lives in the beautiful home with her two sons, enjoying every square inch of this (over) 100 year old home!

It's the Weekend...

... and very slowly am I filling the house with Christmas spirit!

For some reason it seems a little difficult to get started, but that's probably just because it's been an insanely busy week this past week.... I have a few Christmas ornaments clustered together and tied with a beautiful ribbon in my kitchen window, but that's as far as I have gotten.... for now.

It's finally Friday... and what a week it has been! I can not wait for the weekend to begin, exciting things are happening, more on that later.

Does this image look familiar to you? Well, if you are a returning Northern Light reader, it should, but if you are new - Welcome - it's an image that has been a part of my blog header for a little while now... and I still love it!

Have you started wondering what these images have got to do with each other yet?
Or no? Hmm... Actually, nothing! They have a common color scheme, that's about it, I just thought they would be kind of cheery and a good way to end the week!

These Christmas ornaments mark the first holiday image for the Northern Light Blog this year, now the flood gates have been opened ;) I tried, I really did, to keep all the Christmas stuff under wraps for as long as I could, but since it is officially December, I think I am safe....

{Winter} White Done Right!!

A.MA.ZING!
That's what I think about this Aspen home, Photographed by Francois Halard, featured in Vogue. I love that dark wall (be it charcoal or black), how it anchors the entire floor, and "hides" a fireplace.

What a cool mix of furniture; mid century modern with large comfy sofas... ready to curl up with a fur throw, a cup of hot chocolate and stunning views! And the natural light... WOW!
Also, notice the vaulted barrel ceiling. Kept natural it warms up the space and sets the tone for the color pallet!

Yes, please, I would like an invite!! Is that a vintage photograph of a ski slope? Very cool!
...and mis-matched bedside lamps, that just makes the space more interesting, I think.

On a side note; A while back I was watching a show about a (show) home in Vermont, where the designer explained, that she tried to always pick artwork from the surrounding area when furnishing a home. Local artists, local scenery etc, and that kind of stuck with me, it makes a lot of sense...

Can you imagine? Hot tea, Chocolate or Glogg... whatever you fancy apres ski! I am so happy the railing is kept in glass so not to disrupt the view! Even sitting down on the low furniture, the surrounding mountains are still "on display". The fact that the furniture is kept in the same color scheme outside, is very well thought through, keeps the cohesiveness of this amazing home intact!

Swans Island Blanket!

Look no further than Maine for your next, all organic, wool blanket! I stumpled upon these beautiful blankets via Elle Decor, and had to dig a little deeper.

For those of us that require a little color there are plenty to choose from, even several different weaves of thickness! While I admittedly love color, I also really appreciate the coolness of light greys, the richness of charcoal and the casual beauty of indigo.

Swans Island Blankets are certified organic, the sheep are living on an island of the coast of Maine, the wool is spun in Vermont and the blankets are woven the traditional way - by hand - in Maine. The history behind The Swans Island Blanket is quite interesting, hope you have the time to check it out (here)!!

These two images have been shot by Anna Malin of Helt Enkelt. I am so inspired by the sharp contrast of color, the all natural elements in the images and the simple aesthetics...

Time and time again I am reminded, we need only look to nature for incredible color, pattern and texture! The delicate, yet vibrant fall branch is so beautifully captured by Anna! Super color combo, don't you think? I like how the yellow has been picked up in the pillow in the background, as well as the black of the table top, in the iron candle holder on the floor...

Enjoy the last days of fall, winter will be here before we know it!

Seeing Red!

Seeing red is not all that usual for me... Red is not a color I have in my home, and often red leaves me a bit unsure! I can appreciate the color when used by fantastic decorates, such as Kathryn M. Ireland and others.... plus I have yet to work with a client who has their heart set on red :)

Since I have been on a hunt for great artwork for a few different clients, what I noticed first in this bedroom, decorated by Kathryn M. Ireland, was the great Oberto Gili photograph above the bed. Yes, there is a whole lot going on here; patterns and colors all over the place, great texture and lots of different things to look at, all the different cultural elements... still the photograph is what captured my eye!

I remember seeing this image in Elle Decor a while back, so I went searching again... Casually propped against the wall, it makes a great impact in an office space. (Notice that it is upside down, if there ever was a correct way to hang this piece?)

... and if you should want your own Oberto Gili flower photograph, check out Nathan Turners shop on 1st dibs. Remember... stop and smell the roses! (ok, so I am almost sure this is actually a poppy?)

Inspired by this great photograph of peeling paint, framed and positioned above a bed, acting as a giant headboard, I went searching for a version of this for a client...

The only request was to incorporate blue, so this was my first choice. I really like how the small areas of ocher show through, yet the overall feel of the piece is still "blue"!

This was my second choice...

The room has bamboo flooring, but otherwise its white, our accent will be pulled from the artwork. What do you think??

It's the Weekend!

... and I know December is around the corner, but I just can not bring myself to post Christmas inspired images yet! So I am bringing you a few images of beautiful and rustic inspired table top.

Wouldn't it be nice to spend the afternoon here with friends? Lucky for me, the weather here in Florida is finally cooler, so dining al fresco is high on the list!!

Question... Have you started to decorate for Christmas? Is the tree up yet? A friend of mine told me she has the tree & the ornaments up already!!! That's dedication for you... :) But it inspired me to perhaps bring out a few Christmas bulbs and strew them around the house for atmosphere... time will tell.

This week - in the US - it's all about entertaining, and while I am sure we will see our share of table top inspired posts - I might even do one, who knows - I don't want you to forget about the first thing guest see when arriving at your house; The Foyer!

Clean it up! Put away the old mail and all the shoes!! Make sure there is a pretty chair or stool for your guests. Something pretty for the eye, perhaps a candle to set the mood! Love the leaning artwork below, easy to prop for the event, and easy to move afterwards, no holes in the wall!

Fresh flowers goes a long way, but if they are not in the budget.... cut a few branches and arrange in a glass cylinder for sculptural effect!

Remember... this is where your guest start their experience, so start off your holiday celebration right, by doing something outrageous and fun here! Get the conversation going.

Hi there... Sorry for the lack of posts, I have been a bit under the weather. Spent last week with work, work, work and started feeling lousy mid-week. Trying to combat a cold, I was in bed by eight every night, and have spent the weekend drinking tea and feeling sorry for myself! At least Mr. Wonderful was at work, so I could look as bad as I felt without guilt ;) !

Monday morning quiet time!

Continuing the "theme" of my last post; A bowl of Cafe au Lait and breakfast starts the morning off on a good note!

While technically this is a "day off" from work, I have a busy day ahead of me:

- Meeting with a client this morning; A European Girl having a difficult time with the scale of furniture in her new US home... Some homes here are excessively grand, and can be difficult to furnish.
- Lunch with a friend and a newly graduated Interior Design student, for a little guidance.(I'm flattered, I must say!!)
- And then onto another meeting with a potential new client. Not quite sure what to expect, I only know that this is a second home. Busy, busy, busy...!

Cafe au Lait!

Something exciting happened today!! This past September, while visiting my family in Denmark, my mother & I discussed the possibility of putting up a shelf in the kitchen, just deep enough to hold one row of Cafe au Lait bowls....
I had heard rumors that the shelf had been installed, but had not seen a picture yet.

... and then I got a grainy image from my sister of the new shelf today! Very exciting! It came out just as I had imagined! Yeah!! My mother has a large collection, so this was the perfect solution, as they are all to pretty to hide away in a cabinet.

Do you love this library or what? Totally would never dare to do a velvet yellow sofa in my house, but look how cheery it is!! The mix of citrus colors against that dark, glossy bookshelf is so cool! I am hugs fan of orchids, in all different colors, and this arrangement is beautiful, not to mention the large orange container!!! You really can look at this image a hundred times, and find something surprising and new every time...

Bang & Thy; Fall Mood.

Walking the streets of Aarhus, Denmark, I came upon Bang & Thy. This burst of lime green against the black wood, made me stop and take a closer look!

A floral shop... an inviting space to explore...
Super cool floral arrangements, plants and... well, you"ll see...

I spent a good amount of time wandering, looking at everything. There were flowers I had not seen in a long time (remember, I now live in a tropical climate), branches with fall leaves and berries, even a fountain with cream colored floating roses.

In the back of the store a display fit for fall. Dark grey candles flickering, fall berries and vegetables used for display, probably for sale, I'm not quite sure...

The inner sanctum; A dark corner with dark walls, a beautiful old mirror propped up against the wall. A large old birdcage with a couple of real live lovebirds! A zinc box and dried hydrangea wreaths complete the display.

... and what do you do when there are not a lot of flowers around and the creative juices are still flowing? Use what you have!! Interesting, no?

Of course there were beautiful roses, lillies and other blooms, even decorative grasses. The entire shop was such a fantastic place to wander through, so inspirational and eye opening. I love the use of fur, unexpected in a space like this (at least I think so).

While my images are a bit on the dark and mysterious side, there were pops of vibrant fall color throughout, my favorite being this glass cylinder!!

FAN.TAS.TIC! Don't you think? So simple, so beautiful!!

These images were taken on my second visit to the store. I asked to photograph in there, but was not immediately granted permission! I came back a second time, met the owner Dean, and after talking with him for a little while he agreed to let me photograph. I was told someone had taken images in his store without his consent, and subsequently sold those images, featuring his work... Not cool!

The vase is super pretty, it's from the new Summer vignette by Anna Spiro, but unfortunately for me (and you) it's already purchased by some lucky person...

A Comfortable Event...

I was lucky to be invited to an event at a furniture store the other evening, hosted by Bob Williams of Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams. The event was put on to introduce the concept of semi-custom design for MG + BW, where the client / designer picks the furniture piece and then has 117 upholstery fabrics to choose from... Good luck with that one! :)

Their latest book, The Comfortable Home, was a "take-home" gift, graciously signed by both (Yeah!). I have in my collection their first book, and now I can ad this one... :)

I enjoyed meeting Bob Williams, even posed for a photo with him.
... unfortunately that will not be shown here, as it is a really bad image of moi :(

The evening was spent listening to BW talk about their new designs, new fabrics, how the company was started, all the names they had before landing the obvious one;
Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams...
At the end a Q & A session was opened to the floor and I just had to ask about what inspires BW. He listed; Travel, Old movies, Hotel Restaurants, Advertising and Antiques. In fact a new sofa has just been introduced at High Point with ties to an antique. And in London, a while back, the inspiration for their Chesterfield (above) was "sourced". BW talked about how the company is working on being more environmentally friendly, how the foam in their cushions is water based, the wood for the frames come from controlled forestry and their fabrics have become more durable and stain resistant. Overall a nice introduction to the MG + BW furniture brand.

Bob Williams could not have been nicer, I enjoyed meeting him. Did you know he started out as a graphic designer and "fell" into furniture design?

Into the deep...

I could not help but be drawn in, when I saw this image for the first time!! This garden has been designed by Fernando Wong, an award winning Landscape Designer from Florida.

As much as I love flowers for their beauty and vibrant colors, I also appreciate a well planned garden with lots of foliage. Living in Florida I see many gardens, but not a lot of flowers... I have come to appreciate all the variations of greenery; Foliage in many shades of green, ranging from almost yellow, to white, to blue-ish to Kelly green... you name it!
It takes a real professional to make it look this good though, and a small army to keep it up :)

Do you have a garden? A green thumb? A terrace with potted plants? I have a very small front terrace with a beautiful and fast growing palm, and a back terrace with a few orchids in "hibernation". (from time to time I am lucky to see them re-bloom :) )

We planted a night blooming Jasmin in the back, and it is so fragrant and beautiful!!

Peaceful Monday

Truthfully... I could have stayed in bed today!

And had my bedroom been this light and dreamy, well, then it would have been even harder to resist :) Notice all the different textures! An all white room need not be boring, and white is not just one shade, but you knew that, right?

Keeping your clothes out on display could be a good idea, but it does require a certain restraint and organization!! I can tell you this from experience.... my clothes rack looks nothing like this.

I have always been a sucker for a checkerboard kitchen floor, and this is no exception!
In fact, I think I like it even more in this color way, very soft!

Nothing really matches, and that's part of the charm, I think....
Tolix chairs are an all time favorite, I would love to own a few!

The only spot in the house with a pop of "real" color. So easy to change the pillow covers and other accessories, depending on mood and season. Did you notice the subtle wallpaper? White on white done right!!

Black with a touch of Pink

I am kinda liking this patten leather skirt! Love the style of the skirt, the "not too strappy" heels and the touch of pink to soften up all the black...

... and how about an interior interpretation of that outfit? How did I do??

I think those glossy, faceted black subway tiles are totally cool.... however, you might be cleaning forever, as every single little drop of water would show, and that would drive me crazy!

Perhaps in a powder room? Too much?

Bhutan: Royal Wedding

King Wangchuck (31), the "Dragon King", married his fiancee, Queen Jetsun Pema (21) this past week, kicking off a three day celebration in the tiny Kingdom of Bhutan, in the Himalayas.

The ceremony took place at a Himalayan monastic fortress. The King and his Queen were married in a traditional spiritual Buddhist ceromony, and were dressed in traditional attire. The Queens crown is made of heavly embroidered silk brocade. Five blessed scarves have been placed around her neck.

The bride on her way to the monasty, wearing her traditional wedding dress and jewelery. It is worth noting that while Queen Jetsun is wearing traditional attire, her engagement ring and wedding band are of the "new world" kind! (See image #1)

King Wangchuck and his bride in their official engagement photo. Both the King and the Queen are educated, speek english and share a common interest of the arts.

The tiny Kingdom of Bhutan is located in the Himalayas, between China and India. The Dragon King is a constitutional monarch, and the people of Bhutan has an elected government.

I don't know if was yesterdays sweet tooth or just the yummy colors of the S'mores that made me look for these images... I guess it's less calories for me to look at the images, rather than indulge in the real stuff! :)

Are s'mores part of your holiday entertaining menu?
Don't they look amazing? I love dark chocolate and graham crackers, and the marshmallows are just the glue that binds this treat together!! :) Would be a good idea for Halloween, if you are entertaining...

{Fall} House Love

Last year I featured this Summer House in a Winter Holiday post, complete with a thick blanket of snow and a Christmas Tree. This time around I will share different images, more appropriate to fall!

(OK, so I know enough about flowers and blooming bushes to know that the above image was taken in the spring - as the rhododendron blooms in the springtime - BUT the colors in the interior of this house (below) lends itself well to fall, don't you think?)

Warm and cozy colors mingle with candlelight and a beautiful book! I purchased this book (Rajasthan) and it's completely worth a long afternoon, curled up with a blanket!!!

Weather use for sleeping or simply for a cozy and relaxing spot, this nook is soooo inviting!

Imagine cool weather, the stack of glossy magazines, nowhere to be, and lot and lots of tea lights!! I am in LOVE with the skinny picture ledge, filled with all these different, muted colors of glass and candles... surely they look magical in the evening!!

The warmth of the wood in the kitchen is echoed throughout in other textures such as the pillows in the background... Notice the matte black paint on the walls, the door and the huge light fixture. Lots of glossy surfaces as well throughout this house, helps to bounce the light around! This might be a log cabin painted black, but it is not a black hole, or a cave, but a light filled Scandinavian Summerhouse, dressed for fall with lots of texture and wonderful fabrics!

Look at that amazing piece of artwork on the wall!! Entirely made up from butterflies... and I love how the over sized urns are perfect in scale!

Peaceful exteriors as well! ;)
It is very common in Scandinavia to paint woodwork black, and I really like how it plays off of the naturally weathered decking...

Wonderful terrace to enjoy the last days of summer, and with the outdoor fireplace, why not stay outside just a little longer? I am happy to see this house clad in fall colors, hope you enjoyed it as well!!

Following along with Northern Light, you are probably aware that flowers - in all shapes, sizes and colors - are of great inspiration to me...

... and look, even the petals can be candied and eaten! I have not tried this, but the idea is super cool. I have, however, been eating fresh flowers for as long as I can remember; in salads, as decorations on cakes etc.

And these colors... just absolutely YUMMY!!

These image really have nothing to do with each other, yet somehow they all work!

A Dash of Mocha

Welcome to my home... I wish!!*
Does this look welcoming or what? Follow me, and we will explore together, this is a Swedish home bathed in light and grounded by wonderful accents.

To me, this qualifies as White Done Right!! These light filled white rooms where the light just bathes the interior, have been grounded beautifully with a Dash of Mocha.

Looking a little closer at this home, a lot of texture is revealed. The Moroccan wedding blanket on the big chair, the different cushions, the kilim on the floor, the woven baskets, the little Asian lantern in the windowsill... Great mix!

A view through french doors reveal yet another white space just beyond...

Close-up of an eclectic collection of items; nothing "goes" together, yet it all works in creating a personal story!

So simple and beautiful!
Not only a Dash of Mocha, but also a Pinch of Mint....

What do you think? Does all the white scare you?? I like the dark brown accents, and I also really like the mint green country cabinet in the last image, reminds me of one I saw at a friends house, purchased in The Hampton's... She uses hers as a bar and storage for glassware.

Seeing Stars

As it gets colder here in Scandinavia, the scarves are taking over the fashion scene! There are so many super cool ones, many costing a small fortune, even some that were triple my mortgage!!! I am totally NOT kidding...
But in all "fairness" (?) they were made of exquisite materials, the colors were yummy and... I could go on, but what's the point?

These two, with their sparkly stars are just the tip of the iceberg. In fact, I came across the brand StyleSnob, when I picked up a small leather clutch / wallet type thing, and looked up their website. Their prices are moderate, and the items I looked at were cool! :)

As I mentioned in a previous post, the Danish Fashion scene boasts lots of black, leather and fur.... I love this glittery Lucia Necklace with the leather tassel. It would look equally cool over a dress, as it would over a tee!

How about dressing up today?

Beautiful Grey

When I spotted this image I immediately fell in love!!

Not only does it so perfectly demonstrate the color of much of the fashion I have seen on this vacation, but also the knit! Cozy and fab, don't you think?
A tiny little bit over the top as well, just a tad.

I have probably touched every single sweater in all the stores I have visited, unfolded and folded a ton of sweaters. Tried on two, purchased one! Only one! I Promise....

The coolness of Grey have been mixed with black, no shocker there, but also with a touch of camel... I noticed that the girls in Copenhagen, who typically have it together, looked much like these two beautiful, chic girls! Short biker boots are everywhere, and I felt very much "at home" in mine!!

When shopping for interior accessories, I found so much in black and grey! Many items in leather, lots of ceramics, pillows with super cool photo prints (more on that later) and fur.

So much fur! Everything from fashion to pillows, to throws, you name it... Fur is everywhere.

Looking forward to sharing more of my Scandinavian inspirations in the next many posts!

Books I am bringing back...

... well, actually, that statement is not entirely true.
For the very first time, there have been absolutely NO Danish Design books to swoon over, not even a single one to buy, just so that I could say I found something of interest! Sadly!!

However, the Norwegian furniture brand Slettvoll, have just released an inspirational interior design book called "Velkommen Hjem" (Welcome Home). While this book is not yet in my possession (I am confident my Norwegian readers are familiar?) below - for the rest of us - are a few interior shots to drool over :).

While visiting with my sister, we had planned a shopping day (more on that later), when she spotted this fantastic display of fall color! The many bouquets of flowers were displayed in bright red buckets* and the entire display unit was full, making for a huge burst of color.

I just had to snap an image and share with you!

Cottage Garden

THIS is were I have been vacationing, isn't it pretty?

The grounds have the most beautiful flowers, and even though it is early fall here, there are still some late bloomers, as you can see. A small album of the Blue & White flowers from the garden have been uploaded to the Northern Light Blog facebook page, I hope you have a moment to take a look!

It's the Weekend...

... and I am still on vacation! Yeah!!

Don't really have any plans, Just a weekend with long walks, quiet time, family time and a little computer time. I have been going through a lot of Danish magazines, I have come across a lot of interesting people, products and fall fashion. I am absorbing it all and eventually some will make it to these pages, so stay tuned :) !

White, Grey, Black and Natural

Capturing the special Scandinavian Light is a job in its self...

The very subtle nuances... An all White home, sprinkled with the palest Grey and beautifully aged furniture...

Bringing in Black to ground the space, Metallic to ad a little sparkle and natural texture to keep it real! Love the touch of the leather boxing gloves, even if it's just styling for the image...

Now, this is a dining room table I would want to spend time at!! Again the White space has been balanced wonderfully by the three Black lamps, the Zinc table top and the natural materials.

... A small but interesting detail from the large cabinet in the living room. Photography, as well as Scandinavian decorating, at its best!!

Spent a little quiet time reading all your blogs out there today, lots of great inspiration to be had!! Thank you! I noticed that The Zhush has a new look, and I encourage you to check it out! There are some really pretty inspirational images showcasing cool interior accessories.

Spending time...

The exciting thing that happened today, you ask?

Well, for the first time in a week we were able to have one of our meals outside!!!

This is a huge deal, since the weather has not exactly been cooperating while we have been vacationing.... Sooo, we were spending time around the new outdoor dining area ;) There were new chairs, like the ones above, they looked really GREAT, and were super comfy!

Spent the day with Mr. Wonderful at my sisters house, visiting with the clan; Hi All! Thank you for a wonderful meal and a fun time!!

Shopping: Skagen, Denmark

I have just returned from Skagen, a small and charming town at the very northern tip of Denmark. It is known as a mecca for the Who's Who in Denmark during the summer months (equivalent to that of the Hampton's in the US), priding its self on wonderful weather, wide beaches and wonderful, fresh seafood!
(We had one day of sunshine and one day of misty rain...)

Mr. Wonderful and I spotted this pretty little shop, Oscar Bad & Livsstil, and just made it inside before closing... Chatting with the owners sister, who was very accommodating, we were able to browse the shop. I spotted a few super cool items, turns out they were from (new to me) designer Louise Roe.

I picked up this over sized postcard, wanting to know more. I spotted the canvas and leather Book Bag at Oscars, as well as the lumbar pillows with the flowers.

I am thinking I might have to take a closer look, it's looks like a fun bag!! ;)

Designer Louise Roe got her start in fashion and has since moved on to the Interior Design aspect of designing. Her line includes both fashion and accessories for the home.

As I was leaving Oscar, I quickly ran my fingers across this over-the-top, luxurious floor cushion, made of suede (shown here in lambskin as well)... OMG! I'm totally in love!!

Texture Snapshot

Today we went shopping... window shopping that is (read; I didn't buy anything... yet!). I am so excited to see all the new goods in the stores. I am feeling my way, touching everything like a little child, and jumping for joy when I find something really cool!

I picked up a few magazine, Interior Design as well as Fashion magazines, just so I can be fully "prepared" for when I do decide to shop a little, trying to cover all the angles ;) In the new Mad & Bolig a few accessories caught my eye, and they were all listed as items from Brandts Indoor.... I had to see more!!

While I am vaguely familiar with where the store is located (as it is close to my sisters house), I am now on a mission to visit in person!!!!!! What do you think?

Cozy corner...

While it's technically still very early fall here in Scandinavia, the last two days have been super stormy, rainy and cold (at least for us, who on a daily basis, live in the tropics). BUT really, I am not complaining! Actually, it's been quite nice for a change...

We have been able to relax indoors, camped out by the fireplace and we have read a lot! We started our vacation with good conversation, great coffee and super food! Everything in this neck of the woods is organic, EVERYTHING, and we are loving it!!

While the weather has been a little dark outside, it's been warm and cozy inside!

In the next couple of days we will start exploring; Shopping, sight seeing, more family time, more great food and a little golf for the boys. Not too bad :)

I will check in from time to time... Most likely post about our trip, even bring you a few images from here. Hope you check back in, and if you have any questions about Scandinavia... let me have 'em!

Vacation Time!

Finally the day is here!

I am ready for a vacation; Leaving today with Mr. Wonderful, heading to Europe and I can hardly contain myself...

It's been a really difficult summer in this part of the world, for so many reasons out of my control, I am just so happy to be going away, I can't even tell you :) I will be posting from abroad, I am sure, but with less frequency, so please check back in from time to time.

"I'm leaving on a jet plane, don't know when I'll be back again..." :)

New on the Virtual Newsstand

The new issue of Dabble Magazine hit the Virtual Newsstand yesterday, and I just had a chance to look through it last night. I am looking forward to reading their New Orleans feature, but what also jumped out at me was the Industry Profile on India Hicks (page 64)!

After thumbing through the issue, I went digging on their website and found this pretty bedroom ...

I spy a really cool DIY paint job!!
Take a closer look at the bookshelves on the back wall. This reminds me... when in the paint department picking a color and you come across those long pain chips, it's so hard to pick just one shade. Should it be intense and dark, or should it be light and airy? Well, now you don't even have to pick! Why not use all the pretty colors??? And what is even better; you can get away with a test can of paint in each color, saving money AND you do not need to store all those cans of unused paint!! Great design idea, right??

Dinner with friends.

TGIF!!!

Tonight we are having dinner with friends at a new restaurant in town; Organic food, locally grown veggies and locally caught fish. Looking forward to the experience, I am sure it will be really yummy :)

This weekend is the last weekend before VACATION time starts... It's not going to be here fast enough for me, only 9 more days before we leave hot and steamy Florida!
Let the countdown begin :)

Wave action!

This evening I went down to the beach to take a walk and see the waves roll in...

... and this is what I saw!
Beautiful tall waves - we very seldom get these here - lots of wind and many surfers enjoying themselves! This direction is due east, and the dark clouds on the horizon is Hurricane Irene, just leaving the Bahamas. It was quite beautiful down at the beach; lots of people taking it all in, very windy but warm.

Vintage Bahamas!

When visiting the newly restored Dunmore Beach Club on Harbour Island in the Bahamas, this charming little reception pavilion is where you start your journey...
The Beach Club has been given an overhaul by designer Amanda Lindroth, bringing the property back to its early 1960's roots, complete with vintage photos and lots and lots of island-y rattan and wicker!

This exterior porch has been reworked as a bar and lounge area, complete with louvered windows (good for tropical breezes). The graphic fabric on the ottoman and the bar stools is Petite Zig Zag in New Brown from China Seas. The pillow fabric is Melong Batik in Brown, also from CS. These fabrics have been used throughout the property. It gives the furniture a cohesive, natural look, complimenting all the rattan and wicker, making sure the furniture looks substantial and not cheap.
Pay attention to another detail; the light fixtures in the bar are Bahamian baskets that have been fitted as lampshades, a detail that has been repeated throughout the property as you will see.

Without actually having visited myself, I must admit this dining room corner is my absolute favorite spot! LOVE the Tangerine color used, so fresh! LOVE the vintage posters and photos! And what a great idea painting one or two frames in the accent color, totally makes them pop!! (This trick could easily be used in your own home!)

Notice the great attention to detail; Napkins have a pattern in the same Tangerine color! The same light fixture as in the bar is hanging above the tables... and the Tangerine sash on the little Bahamian statue on the top shelf.

Sometimes you just need a place to sit and somewhere to hang your straw hat... Rattan piece upholstered in the same China Seas fabric as seen throughout the property. Gotta love those big hats, a sophisticated beach look, especially in the tropics where the sun is super strong!

The Cabana Bath...
Now it does not get much more beach-y, or prettier, than this; Island Living at its best!!!

A sneak peak into one of the guest cottages, reveal crisp white sheets, an Indian Quilt by John Robshaw Textiles and furniture upholstered in China Seas Island Ikat in Pale Aqua. The braided sea grass headboard can be found here.

This Tangerine color is used throughout the property, and while it reads a little more on the coral side for me, I know where designer Amanda Lindroths inspiration has come from.... Not only the inside glossy color of the conch shell, but also from Palm Beach where she grew up. This is a color that is widely used in Palm Beach, from stucco to flowers to paint.

Nassau-based designer Amanda Lindroth sitting pretty in the tropical interiors she has (re)created so beautifully. The Dunmore Beach Club has been infused with crisp white backdrop, layered with natural colors and textures and brought to life with colors found in the surrounding landscape; coral, green, natural and let's not forget the most amazing turquoise.

The original aqua and white cabanas are a trademark of The Dunmore Beach Club, since 1963... By the way; The Beach Club is named after Lord Dunmore, the first Governor of the Bahamas.

Preparing...

Rumor has it we are in for a bad hurricane (Irene) this week, so a small break in blogging will probably happen as I need to concentrate on securing my house...

UPDATE:

Looks like Hurricane Irene is taking a more easterly course, so we should be good!
Phew!!

I have been slowly starting to prepare the last couple of days, not wanting to panic, nor wanting to get caught in the supermarket stampede, fighting for the last couple of necessities either! So for those of you who have not been through a storm like this before; there is a lot of prep work involved! Don't really want to bore you with the long list....

If you are in the Bahamas, STAY SAFE, as you will be getting the brunt of this storm!

PS. I have come to really like the day before a hurricane, as it's often sunny, quiet, not too hot and windy. LOVE when it's windy in Florida! Sometimes I go to the beach to see the huge waves roll in with the dark clouds in the horizon... Beautiful!
