Sunday Flowers!

… so while most of the eastern part of the US is covered in a blanket of snow, I will cozy up with a blanket of my own, some beautiful white flowers and a crisp apple!

Sunday Flowers... sort of.

I have been drawn to beautiful food photography this weekend. This simple white cake with its woodsy feel, beautiful roses and orchids bridges the gap of my regular Sunday Flowers post and my "new found love" of sweets...

... and what's better on a Sunday morning than a stack of fresh pancakes, decorated with fresh berries and a slight sprinkling of powdered sugar?

Almost too pretty to eat, almost!

Look at this layered cake decorated with Lilacs and single petal Roses. Just beautiful! I can recommend this board, as well as this board for more visual yummy-ness.

This past week I had brunch at a very dear friends new home (Hi CHB!), and in her bookcase I spotted  a  cookbook I had not seen before. The book was from Anthropology, (no longer available, trust me, I immediately looked for it) and the photography made me want to dive right in... I guess that's where this weeks inspiration came from! Do you ever pick up a cook book, just to look through the images? Or the amount of ingredients... ??

Sunday Flowers

Yesterday, before the rain set in, I went to the market, with the intend to pick up a bouquet of fresh flowers.... I was thinking pink, but could really have been persuaded to go with "whatever" looked good. I always have a few orchids in my house at all times, I find that not only are they beautiful, but they really last a long time, so for me that's a win-win situation! However, I was at the receiving end of a beautiful bouquet of soft pink Hydrangeas - my favorite - delivered to my door, about two weeks ago, and yesterday was their last day... so, I wanted to replace them. Well, I came home with organic strawberries, heirloom tomatoes, fresh baked cranberry scones and... no flowers! Just was not my day I guess. 

Do you keep fresh flowers in your home? I know from many years of reading the Anna Spiro Blog that she has come under fire from various people, for her constant joy of fresh flowers, and ONLY fresh flowers in her house... I totally get it though, I have been lucky to have grown up with a mom who had a green thumb and we always had fresh flowers on the table, on the night stand and in the bathroom. Unfortunately, the same green thumb did not pass through the genes from my grandmother to my mom to me, so I must buy my fresh cut flowers... Non the less, I truly enjoy selecting them, caring for them & enjoying them for as long as I can!!

Sunday Flowers

Hi there... Remember me?? 

I know, it's been a loooong while since I have posted on a regular basis! Not that I have not wanted to, there has just not been enough hours in the day (ok, in many days!!!), so something had to give...

If you are still with me, I think that's really great, Thank You, and if you are new to the Northern Light Blog, even better, since you have not had time to miss my input :)

Sunday Flowers used to be one of my favorite weekly posts, and while I have not posted to the blog, I have certainly been busy on Pinterest, this is my Loving Flowers board, feel free to follow! I encourage you to check out the other boards as well, on this board called Northern Light Design, I share a little of my work from time to time, so you can see that I am actually doing "something" :)

... yesterday, I was the lucky recipient of a surprise delivery of fresh flowers... Hot pink Hydrangeas to be exact, sent to me from a Happy Client, and you just can't beat the feeling of a job well done!

Sunday Reading

A while back, I think it was in the Fall, I saw some images of this book on the web, thinking to myself how beautifully photographed these gardens looked, and to possibly get my hands on the book. No attempt on my part to actually acquire the book was made.... and subsequently I forgot about the book!

While shopping for a client the other day, I stopped by Spruce Home & Garden and there it was... Open to the above page, I immediately recognized the image... the style of the photograph had stayed with me! I picked up the copy that was to be mine, hurried to have it put aside, and continued on the mission at hand; Shopping for a client, not for myself :) One for you, one for me...

Now... I almost want to crawl into this birdbath, just to admire the view from my "tub", but really... How unbelievably beautiful are these blue Hydrangeas??

Foxglove remind me of summer, but to be fair, I am actually not sure this is a summer blooming plant... 

I could not wait to get home to sit in a quiet corner, savoring this book. Stacy Bass has an impeccable eye for composition, drama and for capturing the light, the dew, the fog. This books takes you through some rarely seen private gardens in the North East. The stories of the evolution of the gardens, the people who planted and cared for the gardens... just beautiful!! For all the gardeners out there - or those who long for a garden - this book is amazing!!! I read it in one long sitting, cover to cover.

If you are looking for eye candy for your coffee table, this is definitely worth your while :) 
How wonderful would it bee to come home to a white picket fence, complete with  Musk roses spilling over in abundance? Sign me up!!

Sunday Flowers; A Hidden Treasure.

Step inside to one of "my" hidden treasure; WEEKS. 

You know, one of those small family owned shops you just love to pop into from time to time, and quite frankly don't want to share with anyone else ;) Well, I have decided to share with all of you, near and far, so get ready, you will want to come visit, I promise!!

The place is owned by Ron, who has been in business for close to 40 years, starting in the Orange Groves of Florida, but for the past many years he has been in Delray Beach, on the East side.

 

One of my favorite flowers are Orchids, pretty much any kind of Orchid, and while I don't know the names of all of them by any means, I truly appreciate the many different varieties available at Weeks!!

As intriguing as Lady Slipper Orchids are, this is the one that eludes me... as in will-not-grow-for-me, don't know why?

Beautiful and cheerful Ground Orchids, these you see quite often here in Florida.

Totally love the spray of vibrant color, LOVE the lime green lanterns, SO festive!! 

I had too... sneak in an image of these bright Lime Hydrangeas, they light up a dark corner. 

I see this variety of berries in bouquets all the time, but I actually do not know the name, do you?? 

More than a few times I have made references here on the blog about Anemones, specifically this white and black version, and look... a whole bucket full :) And tell me, how many indoor / outdoor floral shops have cool worn rugs, covering the pavers??

I could just run away with this bucket of incredible white Peonies!  

... and check out this super cool, yellow Spider Orchid! Looks almost pre-historic, the edges all curled up, the white stripes, the long "antennas", this one I had not seen before. 

When I arrived in Florida quite a while back, I grew this kind of orchid... 
Still love the vibrant purple!!

So as you can see, there are plenty of varieties to pick from! I didn't snap any images in their gift shop, but believe you me, it's amazing! You need a hostess gift, go there! You need a cool bowl, go there... Coral and shells are a plenty (we are in Florida after all) and one thing that - oddly - makes me return is Tim's Preserve... Black Raspberry, seedless :). Tim works at Weeks, super helpful, and I am told he makes the Preserves on his farm in Pennsylvania. 

It's good! Really Good!!

Now that I have enticed you I am sorry to say... there is no website, no FB page, no blog. 

I am told Ron doesn't even have a cell phone. You will just have to visit next time you are in town!

Don't you just love to see how the other half lives... or entertains??

I have been drooling over this colorful book, Soiree, this Sunday, and I am so inspired to whip up a dinner party! Right now, right here... the ideas and the inspirations are endless!!

Danielle Rollins is the author and creator of the most amazing dinner parties, luncheons and uber chic pick nicks featured in this book. The books cover and the above image are from the A Spring Lunch feature, and not only photographed to show off all the fabulous colors, but also complete with recipes, tips and images of an amazing garden.

This book has it all...

Invitations, Recipes, Styling Tips, Floral Design, Music Selections and fantastic photography! There is even a fantastic Resource section that I can't wait to dive into :)

Really, "all I want for Christmas" right this moment is an endless supply cabinet, filled to the brim with plates in different colors and patterns, silver wear, table cloths and napkins in a rainbow of colors.

Sunday Flowers (on Monday)

It's no secret that I adore hydrangeas,  so much volume for not a lot of money, such pretty colors and they last so long once cut. The best tip I ever read on how to keep hydrangeas alive and well, came from non other than Martha Stewart... If your blooms start to fall, simply cut a fresh cut on the stem, and submerge the entire flower in cold water, and voila... after an hour or so, it will spring right back! Trust me, it works like a charm :)

Another reason to love hydrangeas are the beautiful dusty colors as above!

Sunday Flowers

This weeks Sunday Flowers come to you from Miami... A Big Reveal of a newly designed home happened this past week, and I just managed to snap this pretty image to share with all of you :) Official photos to be taken around Christmas time.

These pretty, ever-so-soft-pink spray roses come from the local grocery store, the dining room table is dark brown with a blue-grey wash / stain, to highlight the grain, and the vase is hand blown glass, in a pale mauve.

Mixed Flowers.

Just wanted to share this weeks pretty white and green bouquet with all of you. 

I picked it up last week, one of those split second decisions, impulse shopping at it's best :)

Having followed along on Northern Light surely you have noticed my love of flowers, and mostly my bouquets are of all the same blooms; be it roses, hydrangeas or even just tropical leaves... However, this little arrangement is made up of several different flowers, and I suspect the florist was using "left overs", as not all of the blooms were super fresh, and all the bouquets for sale were slightly different. But really, does that even matter?? The price was good, they make me happy, and with a little TLC, they have now lasted a good five days already.

So the question of the day; Do you like mixed flowers or do you prefer them to be all the same sort? What about a unifying color as you see here?

Sunday Flowers

Today's flowers come to you from my own home :)

In the beginning of the week I picked up a bouquet of pretty spray roses, and after a fresh round of cuts,  I filled this vase with all the little "cut-offs" and placed it on Joe Nye's book Flair. Now that we are inching closer to the season of entertaining, I look to this book for inspiration! While most of the images and table scapes are a little more traditional than my taste, I still find unexpected color combinations and ideas.

Last Sunday I featured a beautiful book with amazing floral arrangements. This week I decided that this wonderfully moody arrangement would be my Sunday Flower post. The arrangement is done up by Nicolette & Camille, same company who did last weeks amazing bouquets.

Don't you just love the fall-y vibe? Those dark leaves and the small pops of white... makes me think of the forrest, and how you don't necessarily need a lot of blooming flowers to make a beautiful arrangement! 

Check out the green pottery, the glaze is amazing... also like the worn console :)

I was contemplating if I should show you the bright and beautiful flowers from last weeks wedding, or go with this beautiful book; Bringing Nature Home. I found the book more appropriate for the first days of fall, and after you see these amazing images, you will probably agree with me...

The beautiful arrangements are all done by Nicolette Owen & the equally talented photographer Ngoc Minh Ngo is behind the images. Since the books release in March (how did I totally miss that??), many bloggers have reviewed the book, so I will just show a few images this Sunday.

I love how loosely these arrangements are done up, a far cry from the many tight bound floral arrangements we have seen the last many years...

For as long as I can remember my mother has done arrangements just like these, flowers mixed with vines, branches & grasses. All very "English Garden"... What do you think? Is this the new way to go? Or has it really always been the way??
