Mirror, Mirror on the...

Just came across this image of a Venetian mirror, and I just LOVE how it brings sparkle and femininity to an otherwise raw space, filled with natural materials!

... this was the "sister image" and - to me - equally beautiful!

... and that brings me to this mirror at a clients newly finished condo. While the entire space was re-done, a few of my clients "old" things were kept and re-purposed, cleaned or re-upholstered.
(I just snapped this image with my cell phone, so please no judging on the quality of the image. The shadow-y finish is due to the fact that the image was taken "through" the mirror)

The boarder of the mirror is so beautiful! While I didn't immediately have a plan for the mirror, I just knew I had to keep it. The style was nothing like what I was going for, but sometimes (ok, most often), I find that working in a beautiful old piece, is what gives the space character and life!!

Are you a fan of these mirrors, or have they seen better days??

New on the Virtual Newsstand...

Here it is, the new Adore Home magazine, filled with lots of happy color...

This super pretty home in Sydney caught my eye, GREAT style in a small space!
I guess size does not matter after all...? ;)

... this pretty vignette is also worth posting here on the blog, and as I have done before, I tracked down the vintage framed poster, get yours here.
Great issue; lots of inspiration, good shopping tips and many, many ideas!

Have a fun weekend!

Venetian Beauty...

Just leaving you with a beautiful image today... I have been looking for images and design inspiration in pale tones, and came across this beauty of a (bedroom) mirror! So pretty... still love the way these mirrors look, are you still loving them too, or??

I have been incredibly busy;
Family in town for two weeks, design jobs that are at different stages of (in)completion...
and summer heat makes me want to just stay at the beach in the morning, and indoor during the crazy heat in the middle of the day!! Now I fully understand the need for siesta :)

Stay cool!

Mirror, Mirror on the wall...

A few months back I was introduced to Tobi Tobin via Lonny Magazine. I was not immediately familiar with who she was (designer w/ fab shop in LA), nor was I familiar with her style....

It took me about half a second worth of looking at the above image, to fall in love with her style!! These images are all from her private digs in Malibu, California.
What this space lacks in size it makes up for in charm, style, location and plain old chic-ness!

Tobi has designed her home around the beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean, keeping this Cape Cod style house beachy, light and airy. Skillfully working her magic with mirrors, light is bounced around the space and so is the view. Every room in the home boasts several mirrors...

An avid collector of antique furniture, the home has several old tables, chairs and dressers. Some have been slip covered, others left as the are... Keeping the color pallet strict, playing up texture and the view, new and old work beautifully together.

The master bedroom not only has a fantastic view - imagine waking up in this bed, surrounded by a wonderful breeze off of the ocean - but the serenity of the white space has to be amazing. Toby tells Lonny that her personal retreat leaves her recharged after the weekend, and I can see why!
My problem would be that I wouldn't want to leave :)

Natural texture is everywhere in this house; sea grass rugs and runners, straw hats and baskets, wood frame twin beds (scored at auction for a mere $250 for the set), mirrors and old frames with peeling paint, and a french inspired market basket on wheels...

Notice that while the wall color comes across as white, it's actually soft grey (probably something close to Decorators White, which has a grey tint). This guest room has a little of everything, and proves that it is ok to mix and match, high & low priced items, as well as old & new.... Old twin beds, old bedside table and mirror, new lamp, new bed linens.
Fresh flowers go without saying!!

In the kitchen, a small nook has been carved out of the corner, making breakfast an amazing experience. Quite frankly, I probably would spend a LOT of time in here, it looks so cozy :) Again, notice the restrained color pallet and the natural finishes. The two chairs were found at a flea market, cushions were reupholstered and the gilded frames were stripped, voila!

Now this is a bit unorthodox in my book, but non the less... Mirrors above the stove... I don't know, what do you think? One part of me is finding this silly, as I am thinking about the dust and cooking grease (read... impossible to keep this gleaming), and an other part of me says why not?? If you have the mirrors (or other collection) should you not display where ever you want to? Enjoy their beauty and deal with the hassle when it presents itself??
Hmmmmm...... something to ponder for the day :)
In this case the mirrors work with the rest of the house.

Yep, here is another example of what I have been saying in a few other posts... bring out your everyday items, display them in a beautiful manner and enjoy the simple things. I just love how this little tray brings a little texture to the kitchen shelf, and it's the oldest trick in the book, keeping items contained and grouped without chaos. Notice how Toby has incorporated not only mirrors in a very clever way into her house, but throughout the home are many sea shells, starfish and other sea creatures mixed in, adding to the relaxed feeling of the home... I am a fan, no doubt about it!

Do any of you know where to find a good set of black, bamboo handle, silver ware?? I have seen the classic natural bamboo pieces around, love how that looks, but the black ones really look chic, would LOVE to get my hands on them.

SO... mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the... coolest... of them all?

... are you done brushing?

Well, I just thought I would ask!

I spotted this image and immediately thought of the many Chinese brushed I have.
Perhaps I should gather them and display them like this...
While I think this trend is kinda over, I still like them! To me they are interesting and bring texture and beauty to a coffee table. Looking at my small collection, I am reminded of my trip to China; my husband carried a few (... too many :), if you ask him) around, so we could bring some authentic brushes home to family and friends.

I have brushes from China, from Denmark and some that I have picked up in interior shops here and there in the US, overall they are all unique and interesting. Do you own any of these? Are yours all the same color or material?

Which is your favorite??

Happy March!

Hi all...

Been looking for foyer inspiration for a client for the last couple of evenings, and came across this bright and cheerful space. Pretty, bright and clean, very spring-y and here's to hoping spring is right around the corner!!

Have fun today.

Reclaimed door

... picking up where I left off the other day...

Here is another salvaged door, painted the palest of blue and out fitted with a beveled mirror. Do you have any reclaimed items in your home? Care to share??

TGIF!

Itsy, bitsy...

... something about a polka dot bikini.... :) (Only this is a chair dressed in polka dots)

I have had this image in my files for a little while, not entirely sure where it came from, Canadian House & Home, perhaps?
I think it is a great "follow up" to my last post, as I kinda see them in a similar light.

It is a good example of how to combine new with old, different styles, different patterns and making it all work with a confined color pallet. This little nook is so bright and cheerful, but really, there is not much to it if you look closely!! A bench, a chair, a table, a light fixture and a mirror... OK, so there is probably a fantastic view just beyond, and the natural light is also pretty great :)

Hope you have a wonderful start to your week!

Sparkle

A little sparkle goes a long way....

Just wanted to start the week off on a pretty note; pretty blue wall color, blue hydrangeas, beautiful venetian mirror, beaded trim on the jacket, glass doorknobs.

Find the beauty in your home; make little vignettes, display that sparkly camisole you only wear once in a while, leave the high heels outside the closet.... live a little!

Mirror, mirror on the wall...

I thought this mirror was so cool when I first spotted it in Domino, in Jonathan Adler's apartment, as I recall. I love the pops of color in this almost white apartment, and the peacock mirror lends great texture and interest to an otherwise linear design.

Then it popped up again in the apartment of Max Azria, in a slightly more ethnic inspired room.
Equally demanding your attention!

And now you can be the happy owner of a reproduction by visiting here.

.... who is the fairest of them all?
