(End of the year) Morning Java

The year is coming to an end, and what better way to say good bye than with a good cup of java, a healthy bite and gorgeous white roses??

… I received the most beautiful flowers from a client (now also a dear friend) the other day, for a peek, check out Northern Light Design on Instagram (or see the very bottom of this page).

Domino Magazine is back!!
In print and on-line, in every form imaginable... new Quarterly Print issues, new Website with shopping at your finger tips, on Pinterest, on Facebook & Twitter! Plus....
Currently an Instagram campaign is in the works, looks fun!

This is truly one of the most exciting news stories this week (Trust me, here in The States it's been slim pickings this week, to say the least!) So, I just wanted to share with all of you, in case you have been living under a rock... LOL!

Oh, and by the way... Michelle Adams, formerly of Lonny, is the new Editor in Chief!

Always love a good vignette, so I just threw these in for "good luck", perhaps they will entice you to check out the website...

Sometimes all you need is a little flower!

... and, well, that day was today :) I bought myself a small colorful bouquet of spray roses.
I just could not pass up the mix of bright colors; Hot Pink, Yellow, White, Orange and Coral.

Loved it even more when my husband asked who sent flowers... & my answer was "You Did" ;)

Sunday Flowers... sort of.

I have been drawn to beautiful food photography this weekend. This simple white cake with its woodsy feel, beautiful roses and orchids bridges the gap of my regular Sunday Flowers post and my "new found love" of sweets...

... and what's better on a Sunday morning than a stack of fresh pancakes, decorated with fresh berries and a slight sprinkling of powdered sugar?

Almost too pretty to eat, almost!

Look at this layered cake decorated with Lilacs and single petal Roses. Just beautiful! I can recommend this board, as well as this board for more visual yummy-ness.

This past week I had brunch at a very dear friends new home (Hi CHB!), and in her bookcase I spotted  a  cookbook I had not seen before. The book was from Anthropology, (no longer available, trust me, I immediately looked for it) and the photography made me want to dive right in... I guess that's where this weeks inspiration came from! Do you ever pick up a cook book, just to look through the images? Or the amount of ingredients... ??

Do you have a favorite cook book? Do share!

Purple, Plum, Lavender....

So, Yesterday I delivered two chairs to a client, re-purposed and re-upholstered, in purple linen.... I must admit, I was very hard to convince that purple was indeed the color to go with, but the client insisted, so.... PURPLE is was! (I will make sure to share a photo when the project is done)

Well, they came out SO WELL, and the client is super happy with them, in fact she now has me looking at purple in a whole new way! A while back I set up a LOVING PLUM Pinterest board, and I just revisited that board for inspiration, take a peek and let me know your love / hate relationship with this color.

Sunday Flowers

Yesterday, before the rain set in, I went to the market, with the intend to pick up a bouquet of fresh flowers.... I was thinking pink, but could really have been persuaded to go with "whatever" looked good. I always have a few orchids in my house at all times, I find that not only are they beautiful, but they really last a long time, so for me that's a win-win situation! However, I was at the receiving end of a beautiful bouquet of soft pink Hydrangeas - my favorite - delivered to my door, about two weeks ago, and yesterday was their last day... so, I wanted to replace them. Well, I came home with organic strawberries, heirloom tomatoes, fresh baked cranberry scones and... no flowers! Just was not my day I guess.

Do you keep fresh flowers in your home? I know from many years of reading the Anna Spiro Blog that she has come under fire from various people, for her constant joy of fresh flowers, and ONLY fresh flowers in her house... I totally get it though, I have been lucky to have grown up with a mom who had a green thumb and we always had fresh flowers on the table, on the night stand and in the bathroom. Unfortunately, the same green thumb did not pass through the genes from my grandmother to my mom to me, so I must buy my fresh cut flowers... Non the less, I truly enjoy selecting them, caring for them & enjoying them for as long as I can!!

Kitchen Love!

In the last few days I have been looking at design ideas of kitchens... You would think that after having completed two in the past six months, that I have had enough for a while, right? (If you would like to see a detail from one of my just finished kitchens, check here

Kitchens are not really my specialty, but it just so happens that two lovely clients were looking to completely gut and redo, now a third client is looking to give her large kitchen an overhaul... and you know what? Secretly I LOVE looking through all the options out there! Taking a little from this one, a little from that one, a dash of want, a pinch of need and a large portion of WOW, mixing it all up and creating something functional and beautiful at the same time.

Drawn to the soft cream color of this monochromatic kitchen, the warm wood floor mixed with the coolness of the waterfall island clad in marble, LOVE!

Oh, and cooking in there, wouldn't be too bad either!! ... the natural light, can we talk about the natural light in this space?

Thank You!

Typically you do not find red roses in my house, except if they are the Black Velvet kind, they have to be really dark, blood red almost...

I thought today to be a fitting day to share them with all of you, as a Thank You for following along and commenting from time to time, it so great to hear from all of you!!

SO... Merry Christmas and Thank You for all your support of the Northern Light Blog!!

Mixed Flowers.

Just wanted to share this weeks pretty white and green bouquet with all of you.
I picked it up last week, one of those split second decisions, impulse shopping at it's best :)

Having followed along on Northern Light surely you have noticed my love of flowers, and mostly my bouquets are of all the same blooms; be it roses, hydrangeas or even just tropical leaves... However, this little arrangement is made up of several different flowers, and I suspect the florist was using "left overs", as not all of the blooms were super fresh, and all the bouquets for sale were slightly different. But really, does that even matter?? The price was good, they make me happy, and with a little TLC, they have now lasted a good five days already.

So the question of the day; Do you like mixed flowers or do you prefer them to be all the same sort? What about a unifying color as you see here?

Do tell!

Sunday Flowers

Today's flowers come to you from my own home :)

In the beginning of the week I picked up a bouquet of pretty spray roses, and after a fresh round of cuts,  I filled this vase with all the little "cut-offs" and placed it on Joe Nye's book Flair. Now that we are inching closer to the season of entertaining, I look to this book for inspiration! While most of the images and table scapes are a little more traditional than my taste, I still find unexpected color combinations and ideas.

Hope you are enjoying your weekend,
Natasha

Sunday Flowers (On Monday)

Beside my sofa I have a white painted tray table, it holds a beautifully carved teak lamp
(one of my first purchases for our home, and while our style has evolved, I still can not give it up...)
but otherwise the display changes weekly.

This week a wonderful book (by Pottery Barn, no longer available) is on display, and a single rose
from this weeks bouquet... I love to match up an interesting book with my weekly flowers,
a trick picked up from my mother (hi P!).

In my travels I have picked up this pretty little bud vase in glass, it comes in so handy when a bloom has broken off a stem, or if it's a single flower. Anyone out there who "matches" their flowers, books & / or decor??
I have friends that like to tease me, that I am the only one who would take the time to do something like this, however... I find that it's the little touches that make me happy (!) and why not make your home beautiful?

Hope you have a wonderful start to your week :)

Sunday Flowers

Hi there, Happy Sunday!
This week I picked up these beautiful roses from a street vendor. From time to time, when I have cut flowers in the house, this particular vendor is my go-to guy! ... and take a look, aren't they just gorgeous??

Truth be told, they were long stemmed roses, but I like to cut them down a bit, as I feel that the really long stems are a bit to formal for my house.... also, I wanted to use this creamy white old ironstone pitcher, looks a little country, but I think it's really pretty :)

While they all came from the same bunch, some have opened faster than others. They bring such a smile to my face, hope they brighten your day as well!!

Some of you are enjoying an extended weekend due to various different holidays, here in the States it is Memorial Day Weekend, which means honoring the ones who serve and have served, as well as BBQ's, parades and pick nicks.

What have you been up to? Did you go to the farmers market?
Did you leave town? Hope you feel like sharing :)

Natasha

PS.
I separated five stems, from the two dozen roses, cut them way down & put them on my nightstand. If you want to see, cheek out the Northern Light Blog on FB. While you are there, show me how much you LIKE these images ;) Hint, hint!
